Visit from ex classmates

Yesterday was the 3rd day of the Chinese New Year. 3 ex classmates came to visit me .I was extremely happy . They were here to find out my progress in my movements since the last time they saw me, which was a few months ago.We had a great time chatting and catching up on our lives.
Last night my husband showed me an article on "Happiness " It said that our state of happiness is 50% of our biological parents' state of happiness. However we can still increase our state of happiness by not focusing on the unpleasant external causes that affect us ,but we can train ourselves to be happy.
I have not finished reading the article yet, but I know a simple way to do it.The last post I published talked about CHOICE , now I would like to talk about counting one's blessings. This is difficult for many people because human beings like to compare with people who are better than them , however , if we do this , we will never be contented with our lives. I was paid well in my job,, extremely efficient and independent until I was struck by Transverse Myelities in 2008.I became totally paraysed from the neck down and lost all my body functions, except my brain.On hindsight, I should be grateful that I have not lost my brain function as that will make me a vegetable. It is with my still working brain that I was able to have the perseverance and motivation to work myself to recovery. My fingers are stiff, they cannot co-ordinate well , but 3 years ago, I could not even move my fingers. At least I can type now. By focusing on my blessings and my gratitude for what little I can do now help to prevent me from falling into a state of unhappiness and even depression.

I also have come to realise that we take things for granted because we do not show gratitude for what we already have and what we can do. For example the ability to feed oneself, to walk , to work , to have a roof over our heads,etc All these seem so natural that we find things to be unhappy about, eg wanting a bigger house, a bigger pay cheque, etc

Now I find little things to be happy about, like this morning , I could go to the pool to do my exercises for my arms because the weather was good.

That my sister from Bangkok called me just now to catch up with me .This is one good thing that has made me happy today .As Simple As That!

It is 2 days to the Chinese New Year. I spent Chinese New Year 2009 and 2010 in a hospital.This is the second Chinese New Year that I am able to celebrate without being wheelchair confined. At this moment, I STILL CANNOT lift up my arms to shower, change my clothes and feed myself properly. However I want to make a choice here. I can continue to lament on my MISFORTUNATE or I CAN COUNT MYSELF LUCKY to have been able to recover from my total paralysis in 2008. I happened to meet a doctor who had actually told my husband that he should be prepared that I would be bed ridden for life while I was in hospital in2008 .She was very happy to see me this morning and commented that she is very glad that I have proven her wrong when she saw me walking without any aid. I was visiting my godma in hospital this morning.
So I have decided to choose to be happy for my amazing recovery and not dwell on the things I cannot do.
Every one has a choice to focus on the positive or negative aspects of our lives and therefore leading to happiness or unhappiness. MAKE A CHOICE! Be HAPPY!

Simple form of happiness

Being not so literate in IT, I find a great sense of achievement in the ability to set up my new blog.I learnt the basic skills during a blogshop workshop at the Handicapped Welfare Association of Singapore last year. Why do I feel so good despite such a seemingly simple task to a lot of people? The reason is simple, I can only type with my index fingers and I suffer from extreme fatigue. Therefore sitting down in front of the computer is a mammoth task. I had to go in a wheelchair to the Association last year, but I am glad that I sat through the workshop and thus be able to feel this sense of joy which I took for granted when I was up and about before I fell seriously ill and became totally paralysed in Dec 2008.
